The 2011 “Agriculture is Cool” program inspired by the initiative of Governor John R. Kasich included several interactive education stations throughout the Ohio State Fair at which students could learn about the many ways Ohio’s largest industry – agriculture – impacts many facets of their everyday lives.

The program, which also offered scholarships to top participants, was recognized as the best special or specific agricultural education exhibit, event or program for the fairgoing public for fairs with annual attendance between 500,001 and 1 million.

The award was presented during a special awards ceremony held on November 29 during the 121st Annual IAFE Convention. In addition, the Ohio State Fair received eight different awards in the marketing division.

Ohio State Fair General Manager Virgil Strickler explained, “The Ohio State Fair has long been a favorite family tradition and an active participant in the international community of fairs and expositions. I’m thrilled that a panel of industry leaders recognized our great state for excellence from a pool of more than 3,000 members from around the world.”

The “Agriculture is Cool” program will be open to visitors of all ages during the 2012 Ohio State Fair, July 25 – Aug. 5. For the second consecutive year, exiting fourth grade students (2011-2012 academic year) and a chaperone will be admitted for free upon presentation of a valid report card at the entrance gates.

The Ohio Expo Center is a year-round, multi-purpose convention and meeting facility. More than 150 events are held at the Ohio Expo Center annually, including the Ohio State Fair. The 2012 Ohio State Fair will be held July 25 – August 5

The North Dakota State Fair brought home three first place Advertising Awards for its 2011 advertising campaign created by KK Bold. First place awards received were for Color Newspaper Advertisement, Magazine Advertisement and TV Advertisement. Second place advertising awards were for Black and White Newspaper Ad and Poster. Third Place awards were won for Brochure and E-Newsletter. “Our advertising agency, KK Bold, created a fantastic concept this year which translated into award winning advertisements and promotions,” stated Renae Korslien, General Manager.

Additional awards won include a first place award for Promotional Out of Home Advertising for the North Dakota State Fair’s partnership with the Dakota Square Mall and the Fair’s ticketing kiosk. The Fair also took home second place awards for the North Dakota State Fair Tabloid that is created each year with the help of the Minot Daily News and distributed in newspapers state-wide. The final second place award was for the Fair’s quarterly printed newsletters. “I’m filled with pride that we continue to be showcased as a leader in our industry and I believe that our community, state and Fairgoers can also be proud of these achievements,” added Korslien.

Even though the 2011 North Dakota State Fair was cancelled the Fair was able to submit its advertising and communication pieces to be judged. The awards were presented during the 121st annual IAFE Convention held in Las Vegas, Nevada. There were a total of 16 Communication Awards, divided into five divisions based on attendance. The entries are evaluated and judged by a team of industry leaders, selected from the membership of the IAFE.

Inside Scoop: This is a family-owned business and I really love the owner and his wife–Tony and Patty are very sweet people who are working hard to make Famous Pub more of a community restaurant and music venue. Every single thing I have tried on their menu is delicious and the prices are really reasonable! They’ve remodeled, instituted a no-smoking policy, hired a top-notch waitstaff, and the place is now a premier sports-bar restaurant with plans to showcase regular live music (you know I love that!). This Friday they are celebrating their 25 years in business with some 1986 pricing of food and drink items and a balloon drop at 11 pm. (11-11-11 at 11 pm…fun!!) We’ll rock the house right up until the balloon drop! Wait til you see the Main Showcase Room! Who knew! Seating 250+ (Oh!! And plenty of free parking!)
