What is going on during Labor Day?

Two flags better than one for Colorado State Fair & 50th PRCA Rodeo’s Grand Entry.

Labor Day is traditionally the close of summer in the USA, well in theory anyway. We all know that there are a lot of great outdoor activities that go on all autumn.  The American Congress announced that ‘Labor Day’ is a federal holiday on June 28, 1894. For us Americans it is another time to celebrate the warmth of summer and BBQ and outdoor carnivals, and county and state fairs.

For many years, Labor Day was viewed by workers not only as a means to celebrate their accomplishments, but also as a day to air their grievances and discuss strategies for securing better working conditions and salaries. Today,  Labor Day is associated less with union activities and protest marches and more with leisure. For many, the holiday is a time for family picnics, sporting events, and summer’s last hurrah.

There are a lot of state fairs that go on during Labor Day. We have this year -
Evergreen State Fair Washington
Alaska State Fair
Minnesota State Fair
Colorado State Fair
DuQuoin State Fair (ILL)
Maryland State Fair
Nebraska State Fair
Oregon State Fair
Windsor Fair (ME)
Hopkinton State Fair (NH)
South Dakota State Fair
Vermont State Fair

There are a lot of foot races going on in different parts of the USA also. It seems that Labor Day seems to bring out the athlete in some of us. Maybe its thinking about the winter that is coming on, or maybe its guilt for all the extra carbohydrate rich food we ate all summer? Anyway, if you are into running - here are some of the races
